How to Integrate Slack with G Suite
Posted by Jason Etter on Thursday, December 22, 2016
Slack is a central communication hub for most (if not all) of your applications. From dragging and dropping files or links to performing quick searches relevant to project ideas, it’s a very solid attempt at reshaping how we communicate outside of email and chat. Let’s discuss how to integrate Slack with G Suite.
Does a G Suite user need Slack?
Truth be told, when I first learned about it, I thought it was a combination of Google Hangouts and Google+ merged together (here’s how to place a call). It looked a little messy for my liking and I was completely clueless how to communicate with it. However, after using the product for a week or two, I learned to really like the integration. It’s much more than a simple communication platform -and not the Hangouts/Google+ replacement I thought it was.
Also, G Suite users will be happy to learn the two companies recently partnered up and have since added several integration points between the two.
For example, you can…
Send important files to your team with permission integration
When working outside of Drive, it can be frustrating sharing content -especially if it’s unclear if the recipient has or doesn’t have permission. The integration of Slack with G Suite automatically checks if the file being shared is accessible to the group you’ve shared it with. Even better, if it’s not, Slack will be prompt you to update the sharing settings.
So what other integrations are there between Slack and G Suite?
Slack Loves Bots and so does Google!
The folks at Google are building a bot for Google Drive that will integrate notifications within Slack for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. The bot will use Slack’s message buttons and give you the capability to approve, reject and work on comments inside the Slack interface. For those of you trying to minimize the need to work in multiple screens, this will be a big help.
Slack is already working on the new Team Drives
If you’re not aware, Google is preparing to release a substantial change to Google Drive’s sharing capabilities. Team Drives will be shared folders that make it seamless for project management and departments to work, function, and operate without the inconvenience of individual ownership. In short, the folder is the owner which will be a great update! Slack will integrate with Team Drives and provide the same updates and alerts discussed in the previous paragraph. Even better, new files uploaded to a Slack channel automatically back up to a Team Drive.
In addition to sharing Drive files, you can preview Google Docs too!
Slack and Google are working to make it easy to preview a Google Doc file within Slack -just like you would a photo. That way you can quickly scan the content without having to leave Slack if you don’t need to.
Admin integrations between Slack and G Suite
New staff member joining the team? Don’t really feel like going to 17 different places to make sure the new team member has access to everything they need? Google Admins will soon be able to provision Slack for everyone within the G Suite admin console.
Ok so how do I integrate Slack with G Suite?
If you don’t have a file to share immediately, but want to set up the Google Drive app, follow these steps:
- Visit the Google Drive App Directory page.
- Next to the team name, click Install.
- Click Authenticate your Google Drive account.
- Sign in to Google Drive and click Allow to authenticate with Slack.
Once it’s set up, simply drag and drop the file directly in the Slack window, copy and paste the link in the message box, or upload the file by clicking the plus icon next to the message box. Learn more about uploading and sharing files in Slack.
So there you have it. Give it a shot you might like it.
